What are Lake Associations?
Lake associations are typically 501(c)3 non-profits formed to protect a specific lake. In some cases, the associations are structured similarly to homeowners associations and are instead 501(c)4 organizations. Lake associations play a critical role in lake protection through fundraising, education & outreach, and collaborations with local governments and regional partners.
How Many Lake Associations Are There?
There are hundreds of lake associations across the United States and Canada. You’ll find an interactive map showing the number of lake associations in our database by state on this page.
We are also gathering information about the year lake associations were formed, how many members they have, and their annual expenses. These data are helping us understand how much effort is going into protecting lakes in the United States and Canada.
